What is a Slot Machine?

slot

A narrow notch, groove, or opening, as in a keyway in machinery or a slit for a coin in a vending machine. Also: a position in a group, series, or sequence, as of jobs, duties, or positions in an organization.

In a slot machine, you spin a set of reels with printed graphics by pulling a handle. Which symbols land on the pay line, a line in the center of the window, determines whether you win or lose. Digital technology allows a single reel to contain 250 virtual symbols, which means a huge number of possible combinations.

The coloured boxes in the example below show how the symbols should land to trigger a winning combination. This information is found in the pay table, which can be accessed by clicking an icon on the screen or by cycling through the different slides (if it’s split into different pages/slides).

Slots are popular for their high jackpots and impressive payouts. However, you should know that a slot’s result is determined by a random number generator, which randomly assigns a number to each symbol each time you press the spin button. This makes it impossible to predict which combinations will win and when you’ll be lucky enough to hit that all-important jackpot.

Some people are prone to chasing their luck by betting on the same slot again and again, in the hope that a big payout is due. This is not a good strategy, as only slots that match a winning combo will receive a payout. Never be tempted to chase a win that you think is due; it simply won’t happen.
